Rate of pedestrian deaths in New Mexico

In New Mexico and elsewhere, getting around by foot is not uncommon. Residents will walk in the cities, on sidewalks, in residential areas and other areas throughout the state. While this is a great form of exercise, it is also an activity that poses many risks. Pedestrians are likely to share the road with motorists, and if a driver is not attentive or cautious, this could result in a pedestrian accident.

According to recent reports, the rate of pedestrian deaths in the state of New Mexico is indicating that it will pass last year's numbers. Based on current data, 11 deaths have been reported in just Albuquerque this year while 45 deaths were reported statewide.

When looking at these numbers further, researcher found that it was not surprising that these 14 deaths occurred in the month of January. A spokesman for the Albuquerque Police Department stated that most pedestrian accidents are avoidable with roughly half of them caused by pedestrian error. Because these accidents can be so severe and result in fatalities, the state is conducting two studies to help understand the cause of this type of accident. Additionally, the state seeks to take initiative to reduce these numbers by extending sidewalks, crosswalks, roads and bike lanes.

The aftermath of a pedestrian accident can be gruesome. Many of these collisions result in severe injuries and even death. Thus, victims and the loved ones of the deceased should understand that they have legal recourses in these matters. A civil action, such as a personal injury claim or wrongful death suit, could help hold a negligent motorist liable while also assisting with the recovery of compensation for the losses suffered.
