Various dangerous behaviors behind the wheel, like distracted driving, drunk driving, reckless driving and more, can cause an accident in New Mexico. A frequently underreported problem is drowsy driving. When there is a car collision, there is a possibility that one of the drivers fell asleep while driving.

According to recent reports, a woman died when the vehicle she was riding in was hit by another vehicle, whose driver allegedly fell asleep. The accident happened at approximately 3 a.m. The 38-year-old female driver of a Hyundai Sonata hit a Ford Explorer. A passenger in the Explorer was killed. After law enforcement officials investigated, the driver of the Sonata was arrested. According to her, she said she had not been drinking nor had she used prescription medications. Another person said he had been with the woman at dinner and she had some wine.

The driver of the Explorer stated he saw the Sonata behind him and it was speeding. He turned to try and avoid it, but the vehicles collided. The passenger in the Explorer was killed instantly. A second passenger – who had a child with the decedent – had tried to get her out of the SUV, but she had already died. Investigators are still trying to determine how fast the driver of the Sonata was going. There is a data recorder and it will be integral to the case.

Any auto accident with injuries can cause problems with medical costs, lost income and potential long-term damage. If there is a fatality, the family left behind must think about funeral costs and how they will move forward without the contribution of their loved one. When the accident is believed to have been due to negligence or mistakes made by another person, it is imperative to get the right information about legal options after an automobile accident.
