Bicyclist loses life in New Mexico accident

Many residents of New Mexico prefer bicycles as a primary means of transportation. It is true that bicycles provide many benefits. However, in the event of a bike crash, a bicyclist is often at a risk of suffering from serious injuries, ranging from broken bones requiring long-term medical care to death. A bicycle accident can have grave implications for the rider of the bicycle, which became more evident last week when a bicyclist in New Mexico met with a fatal accident.

The bicyclist was crossing the railway tracks when an oncoming Rail Runner train crossed the sidewalk and struck the bicyclist. The unidentified injured cyclist was taken to a hospital, where he was declared dead. Passengers of the train were subsequently taken to their respective destinations by bus.

The Traffic Fatality Unit of the police department and investigators from the New Mexico Department of Transportation were both at the scene of the crash.

It was undetermined by investigating authorities whether the accident victim had been wearing a helmet or headphones at the time of the collision. However, they concluded that the arms, bells and signals for the Rail Runner were in working condition at the time of the accident.

If the investigation reveals that the conductor of the train, or any other employee of the Rail Runner, such as the signalman, is responsible for the accident, members of the deceased bicyclist’s family may be able to recover compensation from the train company. If that is the case, the family should seek assistance of an experienced counsel to help them with their claim.
