How can you stay safer if you’re driving in to the sun?

As we head in to fall and we have fewer hours of daylight, you may find yourself driving into the sunrise and/or sunset for the first time in a while. The glare can be blinding. If you’re already dealing with the aftermath of a car crash, suddenly not being able to see in front of you can be especially frightening. It’s also frightening to realize that other drivers around you are being blinded as well.

If you aren’t able to adjust your work schedule or other activities (and many of us can’t) to avoid driving into the sun, there are some things you help you stay safe. Wearing sunglasses and using your sun visor are essential. Let’s look at some other things you can do:

  • Slow down. That makes it easier to leave extra room between you and the vehicles in front of you. This gives you more time to react if you’re blinded for a second or two.
  • Turn on your headlights. Even if you have daytime running lights, you can make yourself more visible by turning on your headlights. That makes your taillights go on, which helps cars behind you see you more easily.
  • Keep your windshield clean (inside and out). Often, we don’t notice those little streaks and smudges until the sun hits them. You don’t need anything unnecessarily reducing your visibility.
  • Pull over if you need to do so. This might make you a few minutes late, but you have a better chance of getting where you’re going safely.

If you’re involved in a crash caused by a reckless or negligent driver, make sure that you get the compensation you need to deal with medical bills and other expenses. An experienced attorney can help you.
