An airman in New Mexico allegedly caused a fatal car crash. As a member of the armed forces, he is now going to have to go through a military trial to determine his fate.
The man was stationed at New Mexico’s Kirtland Air Force Base. Reports claim that he was speeding when he lost control. This was in March of 2019. The resulting accident led to the death of a woman who was just 39 years old at the time.
The man, who is an Airman 1st Class, is now facing charges for drunken or reckless vehicle operation and negligent homicide. He is also facing manslaughter charges.
When asked about it, the officials at Kirtland Air Force Base said that man is still on duty right now. They did confirm that he’ll go to trial, though, and that a conviction would mean time behind bars. They believe that the trial will take place in the summer of 2020.
Regardless of profession, no one should ever drive under the influence, drive recklessly, break the speed limit, lose control of their car or cause a deadly accident that could so easily have been avoided. With their public image on the line, though, it is clear that the military takes this seriously and holds its soldiers to high standards. It will be very interesting to watch this unique case take shape.
This story also underscores the dangers that everyone faces on the road, every time they get behind the wheel. If you get injured or lose a loved one in a car accident, you must know what legal options you have.
