Automotive manufacturers such as General Motors started equipping their vehicles with their proprietary OnStar technology nearly a quarter-century ago. Many car companies have since followed suit. That technology is capable of performing many different functions, including calling the police when there’s an accident.
A technology innovation company, Bosch, has announced that they plan to roll out a similar service named Help Connect soon. They expect that it will aid motorcyclists if they have a crash.
The software will allow the motorcycle to connect to a motorcyclist’s smartphone via a Bluetooth connection. It will call for emergency help if the crash algorithm that’s part of a motorcycle’s inertial sensor unit detects some unexpected disturbance.
A crash or any instance in which a bike falls to the ground could result in a triggering of this alert system. Bosch notes that the system will be able to track motorcyclist speed and be “smart” enough to know when a motorcyclist puts their bike down in a parking lot.
Much like OnStar, Help Connect will feature global positioning system (GPS) technology. This software will allow emergency responders to pinpoint a rider’s location without them having to confirm the address verbally. The app will include an option for motorcyclists to enter the contact details for loved ones so that they also receive alerts of any potential crashes.
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) data shows that motorcyclists are nearly 28 times more vulnerable to dying in a crash than those in passenger vehicles.
